KYBELLA SHRINKS DOUBLE CHINS
Excess fat under the chin, submental fullness or double chin, is common in both men and women and can even be found in the young. In addition to making you look overweight, excess submental fat or a double chin can make you look much older than your age. This excess fat is often difficult to reduce, even after losing weight.
Now you can shrink your double chin without surgery. Kybella, a new and popular injectable treatment for reducing submental fat, was approved by the FDA on April 29, 2015. Kybella contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that helps emulsify fat in the body. After it is injected into the fat under your chin, the deoxycholic acid specifically targets and reduces the submental fat cells so they cannot enlarge again.
Treatment time is about 15 minutes and treatments are performed once a month. Most patients notice improvement after two to four treatments and up to six treatments may be needed. In addition to reducing submental fat, patients treated with Kybella also experienced some skin tightening and lifting in the neck and submental area.
What is submental fullness?
Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin,” is a common, yet under-treated facial aesthetic condition. It can detract from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance – leading to an older and heavier look. Submental fullness occurs in both women and men, and can be caused by aging, genetics and weight gain.
According to a 2014 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), over 2/3 of consumers are bothered by submental fullness – nearly as many as those bothered by lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
What is Kybella injection?
KYBELLA injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness due to submental fat.
How does Kybella Work?
KYBELLA is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, re-treatment with KYBELLA is not expected.
How is Kybella administered?
Treatment with KYBELLA is customized to achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile.
Each in-office treatment session is typically 15-20 minutes.
In clinical trials, many patients experienced visible results in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered – 59% of subjects received 6 treatments. *
